On October 22, 1954, the Rhode Island Development Council issued an Interim Report of their Hurricane Rehabilitation Study. This report, prepared at the direction of Governor Roberts, describes the weather characteristics of hurricanes, how to measure the damage , and broad principles to be followed in development of our shore areas. This summary of the Interim Report was first published in the Providence Evening Bulletin, and is reprinted courtesy of the Providence Journal-Bulletin Company.

One famous large storm occurred in 1888 and brought life to a stop following increased winds and heavy snow. Businesses closed, the railroad was unable to keep up with the rapid snowfall, and it took until the following Thursday for limited travel to open back up to Boston, Worcester, and New London.
