Scope and Content: This record consist of one (1) copy of the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program publication, “Rhode Island Community Shelter Plan: Where to go…What to do…” The publication is undated but has a letter from Governor Frank Licht on the opening page which dates it circa 1969-1973. <strong>From the publication:</strong> CITIZENS OF RHODE ISLAND In case of a nuclear attack on the United States, you and your family will need to know WHERE TO GO and WHAT TO DO. This Community Shelter Plan, for the State of Rhode Island, contains this information for every citizen in the State. This plan is based on making the best possible use of the fallout protection now available in the State. The plan was prepared by the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program, working closely with the Rhode Island Council of Defense and your local Civil Defense Directors. The plan was prepared under the supervision of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Region One, Office of Civil Defense, as part of the National Community Shelter Planning Program. The plan contains OFFICIAL INFORMATION and INSTRUCTIONS from your State and local governments that MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE. I urge you to READ this plan, MAKE a family emergency plan based on its information and instructions, and SAVE it for future reference. Sincerely, Frank Licht Governor This Community Shelter Plan was designed for two purposes: 1) to allocate public shelter to as many of our residents as possible which they can reach in a reasonable length of time, and 2) to recommend the best action to be taken by people for whom public shelter is not now available. The overall objective is t recommend those actions which will give the best protection from fallout radiation for ALL of our citizens. In case of nuclear attack .on this country, you and your family would need to know WHERE TO GO and WHAT TO DO. This Community Shelter Plan for the State of Rhode Island contains this information for every citizen. If you and your family take action as recommended in this plan, you will have maximum chances of survival.
