Scope and Content: Records consist of one (1) final copy (on archival materials) of the RI Historic Resources Archive Documentation that was prepared for the Morgan Avenue Bridge No. 1099 by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation’s consultant, PAL, Inc. The Morgan Avenue Bridge (Rhode Island Department of Transportation [RIDOT] Bridge No. 1099), constructed in 1885-1886, is a substantially intact example of the relatively rare nineteenth-century vernacular stone arch highway bridge type. The bridge embodies the distinctive materials, design, and methods of its type, period, and method of construction. The bridge's dry-laid random-coursed stonework, half-round arch barrel, unornamented appearance, and long fill-retaining approach walls convey a late-nineteenth century vernacular approach to bridge engineering. It falls within the middle range for both age and length of span when compared to other extant bridges of this type in the RIDOT state inventory. The Morgan Avenue Bridge was determined to be individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C at the local and state levels in the area of engineering through consensus between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Rhode Island State Historic Preservation Office (RISHPO) on March 19, 2012. It is significant under Criterion C because it embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type/period or method of construction.
