Abstract: Records of the Board of Enrollment established for the purpose of administering the draft and examining recruits

Scope and Content: Records of the board organized pursuant to Conscription Act passed by Congress for the purpose of administering the draft and examining recruits. Includes draft notifications / town rolls; military exemptions submitted & approved for drafted men on account of medical & physical disability, son of widow or of aged or infirmed parent, non residence or allegiance to a foreign government, parental requests; two or more family members in service; father of motherless children under 12; unsuitableness of age, etc.; surgeon's reports & recruit medical examinations noting sub district accredited or by whom enlisted, regiment assigned, status (volunteer, drafted, substitute), term of service, date examined, physical description, age, nativity, residence, occupation, marital status, condition of physique, medical claims, distinguishing marks, etc.& result (accepted or rejected); muster & descriptive rolls of volunteers, substitutes & drafted men mustered into United States Service & forwarded to general rendezvous, New Haven, CT; daily, weekly, monthly, tri - monthly returns / recapitulation of enrollments & musters; substitute enlistment receipts & returns; returns / orders & quartermaster receipt rolls for clothing, rations, subsistance, camp & garrison equipage issued drafted men & substitutes for drafted men, etc., 1863 - 1865
