Tram system carriage hauls shop-fabricated parallel-wire strand above footwalk toward west tower of The Newport Bridge. The carriage, in effect, replaces the old "spinning wheel" of the conventional method of constructing parallel-wire bridge cables wire by wire. In the new Bethlehem Steel system many parallel wires are erected and adjusted at one time. In background is Jamestown, R.I. West approach to the suspension bridge is at left.
