Scope and Content: Records of Rhode Island units organized & engaged in United States Service during hostilities with Spain, April 21 – August 12, 1898. Includes orders issued, correspondence & reports, volunteer enlistment / recruit examination records, muster & pay rolls, morning reports & compiled & consolidated service cards pertaining to the First Rhode Island US Volunteer Infantry stationed at Camp Russell A. Alger, VA, May – July, 1898; Camp George Gordon Meade, PA, August – September, 1898 & Camp Fornance, Columbia, SC, November – March, 1899 & Light Batteries A & B Volunteer Artillery at Camp Dyer, Qounset Point, Rhod Island. Compiled records also document activated elements of Naval Militia, men serving the regular army & naval forces and attibuted Rhode Island casualties abourd the Battleship Maine. State contingent in United States service during the war comprised 1825 officers & men: First Rhode Island Volunteer Regiment; (1,237) Light Batteries A & B, Volunteer Artillery (220) United States Hospital Guards (94) Rhode Island Naval Reserve (152 Rhode Island men assigned to the U.S.S.
